National Pies began in 1942 when Alfred Gough, a young butcher’s shop apprentice, developed handcrafted pies that became known among Hobart locals for their juicy meat filling and unique rectangular shape. The brand became a Tasmanian icon and, in 2021, expanded beyond Tasmania to become available across Australia. National Pies continue to be baked fresh daily in Hobart by Tasmanian Bakeries, using Australian ingredients such as 100% Australian beef, 100% Australian chicken and fresh country vegetables, wrapped in 128 layers of house-made puff pastry.
